Benefits of Natural Deodorant: Why More Families Are Making the Switch

Switching deodorant might seem like a pretty small change, but for a lot of families, it's one of the first places they start when trying to simplify the products they use every day.

And I understand why.

Deodorant is something most of us put directly on our skin every single day. When I started paying closer attention to ingredients, I realized I didn't necessarily need a long list of ingredients for something as simple as keeping body odor under control.

But natural deodorant and conventional antiperspirant aren't exactly the same thing. Understanding that difference makes switching a whole lot easier.

What is the difference between natural deodorant and antiperspirant?

One of the biggest misconceptions about natural deodorant is that it's supposed to stop you from sweating.

It isn't.

Antiperspirants are designed to reduce perspiration. Deodorants are designed primarily to help control odor.

And sweating itself is normal. It's one of the ways our bodies regulate temperature.

So when you're switching to a natural deodorant, the goal isn't necessarily never sweat again. The goal is finding a formula that helps you stay fresh without ingredients you personally don't want to use every day.

1. You can simplify what you're putting on your skin

One of my favorite things about natural personal care is simply knowing what's in the jar.

A good natural deodorant doesn't need to be complicated.

At Woodsy Earth, we make our Deodorizing Paste with ingredients chosen for a purpose, including grass-fed tallow, arrowroot powder, magnesium hydroxide and diatomaceous earth.

For our family, making these swaps has never been about being afraid of everything around us. It's about being more intentional about the things we use every day.

2. Natural deodorant works with sweat instead of trying to stop it

This is probably the biggest adjustment when someone switches from antiperspirant.

You may still sweat.

That's normal.

Natural deodorant focuses on controlling the odor associated with perspiration rather than preventing perspiration altogether.

Once you understand that, switching makes a lot more sense.

3. The ingredients can do more than cover up odor

I don't want a deodorant that simply smells strong enough to cover everything else up.

That's one reason we're intentional about the ingredients in ours.

Arrowroot helps absorb moisture, while magnesium hydroxide is commonly used in natural deodorant formulas to help control odor. We also use grass-fed tallow as the base instead of building the formula around a long list of fillers.

The result is a very different kind of deodorant than the stick many of us grew up using.

4. You can skip synthetic fragrance

Fragrance was one of the things I became much more aware of when we started changing products in our own home.

That doesn't mean everything has to be unscented.

It means we can be more intentional about how something is scented.

Our scented Deodorizing Pastes use essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance, and we keep the ingredient list straightforward.

5. One small swap can lead to another

This might be my favorite benefit because I've watched it happen over and over.

You change one thing.

Maybe it's your deodorant.

Then you start looking at your lotion. Your face cream. The products you're using on your kids. The things you're bringing into your home.

You don't have to throw everything away tomorrow and completely overhaul your life.

Sometimes healthier, more intentional living starts with one little jar.

What should you expect when switching to natural deodorant?

Give yourself a little time to figure out what works for you.

You may notice that you sweat more than you did while using an antiperspirant because you're no longer using a product designed to reduce perspiration. You may also find that the amount of deodorant you need, or how often you apply it, is different.

That doesn't necessarily mean your natural deodorant isn't working.

You're simply using a different kind of product.

And if one formula doesn't work well for you, that doesn't mean all natural deodorants won't. Bodies are different, and ingredients and formulas vary tremendously from brand to brand.

Why we make ours with tallow

When we started Woodsy Earth, we weren't trying to create complicated products.

Quite the opposite.

We wanted to get back to simple ingredients and make products we felt good about using in our own home.

Grass-fed beef tallow became the foundation of so many of the things we make because it's a beautiful, rich base for skincare—and because we render ours ourselves, we know exactly what we're starting with.

Our Deodorizing Paste grew from that same philosophy: use what is needed, leave out what isn't, and make something we'd actually use ourselves.

Is natural deodorant worth switching to?

If your goal is to simplify your personal care routine and become more intentional about the ingredients you use every day, I think deodorant is a wonderful place to start.

It isn't about doing everything perfectly.

It's about learning, making one change at a time, and finding better options that work for your family.

That's really how Woodsy Earth began, too.
